Although many depend on it for their livelihood, it doesn't burn clean, and like oil workers, you risk your life doing it. Actually, probably more so. Obama is actually going to prioritize the environment over greed and convenience. It's about time!
To those of you who object to more expensive energy, understand that the US has artificially low energy prices already compared with the rest of the world. Your cheap energy comes at the expense of life, human and other. When we switch our nation's dependence from coal and oil to reusable energy, we will need to hire masses of people to make that happen. Where oil and coal jobs go, other jobs are created. The notion that switching to a green economy immediately leads to job loss is bogus.
The world's next superpower will be the nation that figures out renewable, safe energy. It will take a nation with an entrepreneurial spirit, a well educated workforce, manufacturing capability, lots of land to work with, and the technical capacity to prioritize it. Energy and products that come from fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal will soon be a thing of the past.
