20-50 million curies of cesium 137 in fuel pools -- :)™
versus 6 million curies of cesium 137 released from Chernobyl (about 40% of its core). To put that in perspective, a single spent fuel pool holds more cesium 137 than was deposited by all atmospheric nuclear weapons tests in the Northern Hemisphere combined. That's why U.S. authorities have been leaning on the Japanese to hit the problem with everything they've got, even if it means suicide missions. The only good thing is that wind has been blowing everything out to sea, and the Pacific Ocean is probably the best place on the planet for the stuff to go, but I wouldn't want your brother to bet his life on the wind not shifting while he's there.
